Archaeology of Play: Alphabet of the Imaginary in Aldo van Eyck

Authors

  • Clara Eslava Cabanellas Universidad Nebrija

Abstract

Aldo van Eyck’s playgrounds are the subject of great interest and topicality with a growing number of publications and research in recent years that delve into this rich scenario from a multiplicity of approaches. In this article, we aim to address the epistemological aspect of his proposal, the nature of his play spaces and elements as a vehicle of mediation between children and the world, between reality and the imaginary. To this end, we will investigate the author’s creative search and his link with childhood as a primordial scenario. In this research, we will ask ourselves about the intimate connection between play, childhood, and the meaning of art, and we will do so in the light of a key text in art theory: “Meditations On A Hobby Horse” by Ernst H. Gombrich. In this way, we will look back and immerse ourselves, through the world of childhood and art, in the archaeology of lost play.
