Abstract

Cargo transportation is of vital importance to the economy, but little has been studied about traffic accidents under the perspective of skills and work activity. The aim of this study was to explore possible relationships between work, competence and work accidents among truck drivers. The quantitative research was carried out by means of a ques-tionnaire, answered by 198 truck drivers from freight companies in the Brazilian southeast region. The results showed that the traffic accidents have multiple causes, and the younger ones, with less time in profession and the ones that receive by delivery have more accidents. It has been found an association between the occurrence of accident episodes in the last 12 months and to give more importance to competences related to driving skills in acci-dent prevention than non-driving competences. These results suggest that work accidents are more related to the organization of work than to the values that competences have for workers, which indicates that to reduce accidents should prioritize changes in work organization.
